Course Description

This qualification is designed to provide you with essential knowledge and skills that will support your progression into employment in roles such as a research scientist, project engineer and other specialisms within science and engineering or progression on to higher education within science and engineering. You will acquire an understanding of distinct vocational areas within the science and engineering and develop a range of practical and cognitive study skills. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to enhance your Mathematics skills.

Course Delivery

Lessons are delivered online via webinars - you can always replay the recording in case you miss a lesson. 

To gain this qualification, you are required to carry out 10 hours of laboratory practicals at our local University partner in Derry-Londonderry. These practicals will be delivered over 3 days, 1.5 days in Semester 1 and 1.5 days in Semester 2.

What Will I Study?

Module 1. Introducing Physical Science

 

During this module you will learn about the physical laws that govern the universe, and characteristics of matter, including the changes it undergoes:

 

  • You will understand physical science as an academic discipline

  • You will learn to investigative methods used in physical science

  • You will gain insight into applications of physical science research

  • You will be informed about potential career paths related to physical science

 

Module 2.  Forensic Science

 

In this module you will learn about concepts of scientific literacy skills and a broad overview of some of the main principles, practices and techniques used in Forensic Science and the roles of Forensic Scientists:

 

  • You will learn about the uses of chromatography to analyse soluble dyes

  • You will be able to obtain and classify fingerprints

  • You will be able to identify the structure of different fibres

  • You will learn about steganography

  • You will learn how graphology can be used in forensic science

  • You will be able to use techniques for the analysis of similar substances from more than one source

 

Module 3.  Working in Science and Technology

 

During this module you will gain knowledge and skills that an employee in the science industry needs to be an effective, efficient and safe member of a team. You will learn communication practices and how to work safely in a scientific workplace:

 

  • You will gain insight on how a science or technology based organisation operates

  • You will learn about the product development process in science or technology

  • You will  be familiar with the duties and responsibilities of a junior technician or assistant practitioner in a science or technology based organisation

  • You will learn the personal, communication and ICT skills needed to work in a science or technology based organisation

  • You will learn about health and safety working practices and procedures within a science or technology based organisation

 

Module 4.  Practical Scientific Project

In this module you will learn about skills in selecting, planning and undertaking a practical scientific project. You will use analytical and evaluative skills to draw conclusions and present findings in an appropriate style, using academic conventions:

 

  • You will be able to plan a practical scientific project

  • You will be able to use appropriate practical skills

  • You will be able to analyse and present results

 

 

Module 5. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Enrichment Activity

 

During this module you will learn about real world STEM concepts through hands-on learning:

 

  • You will understand how a specific STEM enrichment activity will develop own knowledge

  • You will learn how to reflect on the STEM enrichment activity experience

 

Module 6.  Research Skills

 

In this module you will understand what is involved in the preparation of a research study. It will help you to develop skills to identify research questions, and design and run a research study, including how to select, review and reference sources:

 

  • You will understand the key concepts of research

  • You will learn about research ethics

  • You will be able to plan a research project

  • You will learn how to structure a research report

 

Module 7.  Critical Thinking Skills

 

During this module you will learn why critical thinking skills are a vital part of your academic life – when reading, when writing and when working with other students; and you will discover what critical thinking is and how to do it:

 

  • You will understand the concept of critical thinking

  • You will gain insight into the importance of critical thinking

  • You will be able to apply critical thinking skills

  • You will be able to evaluate own critical thinking skills

 

Module 8.  Undertaking a Research Project

 

In this module you will gain knowledge and understanding in skills required to undertake a research project:

 

  • You will be able to plan a research project

  • You will be able to undertake a research project

  • You will learn how to evaluate a research report

 

Module 9.  Calculations

 

During this module you will learn about mathematical calculations and you will be able to:

 

  • add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers and numbers with up to three decimal places

  • use fractions

  • use percentages

  • convert between fractions, decimals and percentages

  • calculate ratio and direct proportion

  • evaluate expressions and make whole number substitutions in given formulae to produce results

  • use a calculator to calculate with fractions, decimals and percentages

  • use strategies to check calculations

 

Module 10.  Science Skills

 

During this module you will create a solid foundation in the fundamentals of science that you will be able to build on in your further study:

 

  • You will be able to use a microscope

  • You will learn how to use a Bunsen burner safely

  • You will be able to use a Bunsen burner safely

  • You will be able to use a thermometer to take accurate temperature readings

  • You will understand how the boiling point of a liquid can be altered

  • You will be able to show how the boiling point of a liquid is affected by the addition of a solute

  • You will be able to use the flame test technique to identify metals contained in solutions

  • You will learn about the changes that can occur when two substances react together

  • You will learn about the changes that can occur when substances react together
